Five-year-old Ed released the emergency brake on the family car and became trapped in the door as it rolled down their steep driveway into the road. His father dug him out from under the left rear tire and began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while his mother retrieved the car keys for a frantic race to the hospital.
Ed saw himself sitting between his parents as though watching from outside the front windshield. He observed everything - his parents' panicked faces, both crying, his own bruised and battered face with burst blood vessels. After an unknown duration outside the car, he began floating upward into darkness, then felt tremendous acceleration through total darkness like space travel. Suddenly he stood on what felt like a loading dock with a powerful, bright light overhead. The light was extremely bright, filled with love and knowledge. A man was present but unclear due to the light's brightness. Thoughts entered Ed's mind from the light - he felt loving God and love for all people. Beautiful music and choir-like vocals he couldn't quite understand accompanied the experience. The experience transformed Ed immediately. When his preacher discussed a "fearful and terrible God," Ed told his mother he didn't want to attend church anymore. In school, he frequently spoke about the need to love one another, telling classmates about seeing God, leading to sessions with school psychologists who said he had too vivid an imagination. He studied philosophy of religion in college and learned meditation techniques, sometimes seeing the Light again during deep meditation.
