Dean, sixteen years old with severe kidney problems requiring daily dialysis, experienced shortness of breath and disorientation. His parents brought him to Children's Hospital where he suddenly slumped over in the admitting room. No pulse could be found, and he was rushed to intensive care where doctors performed chest compressions and administered epinephrine and other drugs to restart his heart. He awoke fully oriented twenty-four hours later.
Dean initially only told doctors he remembered leaving home. To his family, he revealed having a supernatural experience beyond human words. Two years later, he described lying on an ICU table when he suddenly found himself standing and traveling through an extremely wide tunnel without visible walls, moving at high speed without wind. He knew something awaited him at the tunnel's end that was greater than life itself. Lights began flashing around him, confirming the tunnel structure, moving at hundreds of miles per hour. A seven-foot tall being in a white gown with golden hair accompanied him, radiating peace and love without speaking. Dean knew this wasn't Christ but someone sent from Christ, likely an angel. The experience ended before reaching the tunnel's destination. Dean had also experienced near-drowning at age ten, seeing dialysis memories in a life review before slipping from his body into bright white light. The experiences made his family develop deep faith in God, believing Dean had a special calling and purpose in life.
