Cindi, a seventeen-year-old who had been living with her boyfriend after being kicked out of home at fifteen, smoked crack cocaine and subsequently complained of severe chest pains. By the time her boyfriend drove her to the hospital, she was in complete cardiac arrest. Doctors worked for several hours to resuscitate her, including opening her chest for direct cardiac massage. After normal heartbeat was restored, she remained comatose for several hours.
Her family doctor, Dr. Vern Cherewatenko, arrived and spoke directly to her comatose form, telling her she couldn't give up and had to fight. He asked her to open her eyes and talk to him, after which her eyelids fluttered and she awoke. During her cardiac arrest, Cindi floated above her body watching doctors push on her chest, though she couldn't see the detail of them being inside her chest. She then passed into a large room filled with friends, open at the top to the sky. Sparks filled the air and streaks of light zoomed up from earth, bursting into rainbows. She desperately wanted to become one of those sparks but didn't know how. A closed door stood before her - she knew opening it meant never returning, feeling both afraid and drawn to it. Her deceased grandfather appeared to help her, taking her hand and telling her to return to her body as she had work to do. He led her out of the room and back to her body. The experience occurred weeks after her interview with Dr. Morse.
