Chris developed severely high blood pressure from kidney problems at age ten, requiring a kidney transplant from his mother. Post-transplant, he developed a bacterial infection that invaded his heart, causing his aortic valve to swell and requiring emergency heart valve surgery. During the surgery, Chris experienced cardiac arrest and was successfully resuscitated.
Upon awakening from surgery, Chris excitedly told his mother about climbing a staircase to heaven during the operation. He described feeling wonderful and peaceful as he climbed upward in darkness. Approximately halfway up the staircase, he made a conscious decision not to continue climbing higher, understanding that going further would mean not returning to life. His primary concern was for his parents, who had already lost another son, and he didn't want them to be left without any children to care for. Chris turned around and descended the staircase, feeling himself slip back into his body at the bottom. The experience provided him with a sense of peace and purpose. Months later, Chris had completely forgotten this experience, likely due to the amnesia-inducing medications including narcotics and Valium administered during his treatment. His mother corroborated that he shared this experience immediately upon awakening from surgery, expressing it as a wonderful secret about climbing a staircase to heaven. The experience brought comfort to both Chris and his family during a life-threatening medical crisis.
