Annie, a depressed sixteen-year-old who had experimented with drugs and alcohol, attempted suicide after her boyfriend announced he was leaving her for another girl. Her mother had committed suicide years earlier. Annie took a handful of barbiturates with large amounts of vodka at a party. She fell face-first onto the floor, prompting friends to carry her to the bathroom where they induced vomiting and gave her a shower to keep her awake, avoiding calling police. During this time, Annie floated out of her body to the ceiling where she encountered someone she described as a Guardian Angel. Both were made of light, with Annie feeling three-dimensional but non-solid, like gelatin. She experienced love, peace, and escape from life's tensions while enveloped by light. The angel communicated without speaking, showing her the beauty of her body and every body, explaining that her body was a gift meant to be cared for, not destroyed. Annie felt deep shame and begged for life, receiving the strongest feeling of love she had ever experienced. She awoke in an emergency room. The experience immediately transformed her - she ended the relationship, stopped drinking and using drugs, developed new friends, became serious about school, and felt given a mission in life with an inner energy that never left.
