Darla, now a forty-five-year-old housewife in Arizona, had her tonsils removed at age six in a rural Midwest doctor's office. The doctor administered too much ether anesthetic, causing Darla to have a cardiac arrest on the examining table. She experienced a dark period with a sense of moving through something, which she identified as going through a tunnel. Upon emerging, she was drawn to a white light like metal to a magnet. She thought "This is so peaceful. This is what heaven is." The light was described as energy without a face, very wonderful. She wanted to stay but began thinking about her three younger sisters and how their lives would be ruined without her. She also thought her father would kill the doctor if she didn't return. From somewhere above, she could see the doctor shaking her and the nurse looking extremely scared. Their faces were so vivid she could have identified them years later. Upon returning to life, she knew she had been to heaven. The experience made her more easygoing than her sisters and less materialistic. She realized that clock time isn't how time really is - what seems like a long time is really only a fraction of a second. This perspective profoundly affected her approach to life.
