Spencer Christian, now weatherman on Good Morning America, experienced a near-death event at age five during a routine tonsillectomy in Newport News, Virginia. While under ether anesthesia, he began hemorrhaging severely and lost a great deal of blood. Doctors later told his family that the blood loss was so severe and he became so weak that he nearly died on the operating table. During the crisis, Spencer regained consciousness while surgery was ongoing. He could see doctors and nurses working furiously over him and felt the pulling and tugging in his throat. He then experienced leaving his body and viewing the scene from near the ceiling. He described a complete loss of fear and panic, replaced by the most complete comfort and security he had ever felt, comparing it to being held and rocked by his mother. While he did not encounter a defined being he would call God, he sensed having an option about whether to return. He chose to go back and reenter his body. The experience gave him a lifelong sense that life continues after physical death. He feels his life purpose is to pass on positiveness daily and be charitable and sensitive to others' needs. He now sponsors videotapes helping people with practical aspects of death and dying.
