A four-year-old child was sent by their eight-year-old sister to the basement to retrieve a toy, as the sister was afraid to go down alone. The basement light did not work, so the child took a flashlight. While descending the steps, the child pointed the flashlight up at the burned-out bulb out of curiosity to see what it looked like. This caused the child to fall off the side of the steps onto the cement floor. The child has no memory of the fall itself. The next memory was being up by the ceiling, looking down at themselves lying facedown and motionless on the floor. Despite the darkness, the child could see themselves not breathing or moving. While hovering there, thinking they must be dead, the child felt very relaxed and good. The basement began getting progressively lighter, with light coming from behind. Turning around revealed no wall, just a small very bright light high up that kept growing bigger and bigger. The child described it as the most beautiful thing ever seen. Just as they were turning to go toward the light, their mother came through the door, rushed down the stairs, found them gray and not breathing, picked them up and shook them, which restarted their breathing. The mother then took them upstairs and called the doctor.
