A forty-nine-year-old man suffered a heart attack so severe that after thirty-five minutes of vigorous resuscitation efforts, the attending physician gave up and began completing the death certificate. Only when someone noticed a flicker of life did the doctor resume resuscitation efforts with defibrillation paddles and breathing equipment, successfully restarting the patient's heart. The following day, when more coherent, the patient surprised the medical team by describing in precise detail the emergency room events during his clinical death.
The patient's account included remarkably accurate observations that astounded the physician, particularly his vivid description of the emergency room nurse who had assisted during the crisis. He described her perfectly, including her wedge hairdo and correctly identified her last name as Hawkes, despite having no prior knowledge of her identity. He explained that Nurse Hawkes had rushed into the room rolling a cart equipped with what appeared to be two Ping-Pong paddles, which he correctly identified as the defibrillation equipment essential for resuscitation. When questioned about his impossible knowledge of the nurse's name and her actions during his cardiac arrest, the patient revealed he had left his body and, while attempting to walk down the hall to see his wife, had passed directly through Nurse Hawkes' body. During this passage, he read her name tag and memorized it to thank her later for her efforts. The doctor, who discussed this case at length with researchers, was profoundly affected by the experience, concluding that the patient's presence and observation during his own resuscitation was the only explanation for such complete accuracy in his account.
