A Vietnam veteran experienced an extraordinary out-of-body episode after being severely wounded on the battlefield. From an elevated perspective above his physical body, he observed as Vietcong soldiers approached his apparently dead form and systematically stripped him of all possessions including his watch, gun, and shoes. Despite the severity of his injuries and the traumatic nature of the situation, he experienced calm and peace rather than horror or pain during this observation, maintaining clear awareness of events while completely dissociated from his physical form.
Continuing his out-of-body observation, the veteran watched as American forces returned to the battlefield later that afternoon. He witnessed his body being placed in a black body bag and stacked on a truck with other casualties for transport to the morgue for embalming preparation. At the morgue, he observed the embalmer make an incision over his left femoral vein to inject embalming fluid. The procedure revealed excessive blood oozing, alerting the embalmer that he remained alive. Doctors were immediately summoned, confirmed his survival, and rushed him to the operating room where his arm was amputated. The veteran observed all these events from his dissociated state with remarkable clarity and detail. Years later, when examined by Dr. Sabom, physical evidence confirmed his account - a small one-inch scar was present exactly over the left femoral vein where he described the embalming incision. This physical corroboration, combined with his detailed observations of events while supposedly dead, provided compelling evidence of conscious awareness during clinical death. His calm demeanor throughout the experience, despite the extreme trauma, demonstrated the peaceful nature often reported in near-death experiences even during violent circumstances.
