Nick, a former con artist and criminal who had engaged in activities ranging from defrauding widows to drug running, experienced a life-transforming near-death episode when struck by lightning while golfing on a cloudy day. The lightning strike killed him instantly, after which he hovered above his body momentarily before speeding down a dark tunnel toward a spot of light. Upon emerging from the tunnel, he found himself in a bright pastoral setting where he was greeted by deceased relatives and other beings who were "glowing like Coleman lanterns," radiating an intense luminescence.

He now lives each day with conscious awareness that every action will be reviewed again, using this knowledge as moral guidance. His transformation from hardened criminal to someone dedicated to helping others represents one of the most dramatic personality changes, demonstrating the powerful redemptive potential of the near-death experience.
