Martha Todd, a respected English professor at a southern college, experienced cardiac arrest during routine surgery for cyst removal when an allergic reaction to anesthesia stopped her heart. She recalls hearing the physician urgently call for the crash cart while simultaneously experiencing profound peace and relaxation despite awareness of being in medical crisis. Upon hearing "cardiac arrest" announced, she found herself floating toward the ceiling, clearly observing the medical team working on her body below. Despite wanting to communicate that she was fine, an invisible barrier prevented any interaction with the physical world.
Martha became aware of an elongated, dark opening through which she began traveling at high speed, feeling both puzzled and exhilarated. She emerged from this tunnel into a realm of soft, brilliant love and light that seemed to permeate her entire being. The love was omnipresent, surrounding and saturating her essence. During this experience, she was shown or witnessed the complete events of her life in a vast panoramic display. Deceased friends and relatives appeared in this light, including a college friend, her grandfather, and a great aunt, all radiating happiness and appearing in a beaming state. The experience culminated when a man in light informed her that she must return, explaining that she had not completed her purpose in life. She returned to her body with a sudden, jarring lurch. Immediately recognizing that her life had fundamentally changed and new realities had opened, Martha attempted to share the experience but encountered fear and concern from family and medical staff. Her mother worried about religious delusion, while her doctor diagnosed hallucinations and recommended psychiatric evaluation, resulting in her placement in a mental hospital despite the profound positive transformation she had undergone.
