Sam, a nine-year-old boy, experienced cardiac arrest due to an adrenal gland disease approximately one year before recounting his NDE to Dr. Moody during a routine examination in a Georgia hospital. During the cardiac arrest, Sam reported floating out of his body and observing from above as the doctor performed chest compressions. Despite trying to communicate with the medical staff to stop the resuscitation efforts, he found himself unable to be heard or acknowledged.
Following the out-of-body experience, Sam underwent a rapid upward movement, witnessing the earth falling away beneath him. He then traversed through a dark tunnel and emerged to encounter a group of luminescent beings he described as "angels" without wings. These entities radiated love toward him, and everything in this realm was suffused with light. The environment consisted of beautiful pastoral scenes surrounded by a fence that marked a boundary. Sam was informed by the angels that crossing this fence would prevent his return to life. The experience culminated when Sam encountered a being of light whom he identified as God. This supreme being directed him to return to his body and reenter life. Despite his reluctance to leave this peaceful realm, Sam was compelled to return. The transformative nature of this experience was incorporated into Sam's personality, making him notably mature and sensitive compared to his peers, with a complete absence of fear regarding death.
