Sandy was five years old when she developed encephalitis (brain inflammation) from a mosquito bite and nearly died. She was hospitalized in critical condition. During her NDE, she drifted into a safe, black void of comfort and ease where she felt at home with no pain or fear. A small light in the distance drew her rapidly toward it. When she reached it, she knew it represented peace, joy, and deep unconditional love.
The light was a sparkling, glowing cloud she recognized as God, despite never discussing God at home or attending church. She knew this place was her real home and felt safe like being held by her father, only more so. She was then joined by another smaller light—a girl about ten who looked like her. The girl said "I am your sister" and identified herself as Willie, named after their grandmother Willamette. Willie said their parents were waiting to tell Sandy about her later. Willie warned Sandy she had to return to save their mother from a fire, gently insisting despite Sandy's tantrum-like refusal. Sandy saw her parents like a movie beside her hospital bed begging her not to die. God chuckled at her childish antics with great compassion. Another light appeared—their neighbor Glen—who uncharacteristically shouted at her to go home immediately. This shocked Sandy into compliance. Her parents initially called it a dream until she drew Willie's picture. They confirmed Willie had died of accidental poisoning a year before Sandy's birth. Glen had died of a heart attack the day after Sandy entered the hospital. The fire warning remained mysterious, though her mother said losing Sandy would have been "like living hell, fire and all."
