Viva experienced a complication during surgery that resulted in her apparent death. She was above her body on the operating table observing the surgical team who thought she was dead. She became aware that she had a sheet over her whole body and head, was no longer in the surgical suite, and knew that the medical team believed she had died. This out-of-body observation provided her with knowledge of her medical status.
During her NDE, she found herself standing in front of an exquisite and beautiful English cottage described as the perfect home. Golden light streamed from the windows in the late dusk. She knew God was in the house and wanted to go inside to be with Him. As she put her hand on the door handle, she received a clear message: "If you go in, you cannot come out. You have a four-year-old son who needs you." She was further told that people on earth needed to know everything she had witnessed—that their earthly experience is not the totality of existence but only part of the overall plan. She understood that her fear was an obstacle to coming to know God and His presence, not only for her but for everyone. This revelation about fear as a barrier to divine connection was presented as universal truth. The experience provided Viva with both veridical perception of her medical condition and profound spiritual insights about the nature of existence, the role of fear in spiritual development, and her purpose in sharing this knowledge with others. Her four-year-old son served as the primary earthly anchor for her return.
