Lauren was riding a snow saucer being towed by a car when she struck a parked car at approximately 30 miles per hour. She sustained catastrophic injuries including five skull fractures, two broken eye orbits, a destroyed left cheekbone, and a jaw broken in three places. The severity of her injuries placed her in immediate life-threatening danger requiring extensive medical intervention.
During her near-death experience, Lauren left her body and entered an aura of all white light that was warm and peaceful, with pure Love emanating through and around her. Her grandfather, who had passed away earlier that year, appeared and embraced her, saying "My darling, you have a decision to make." She understood this meant choosing whether to stay or return to life. She experienced a complete life review where everything seemed whole and complete. She asked specific questions about her potential return, including whether anything would be wrong with her if she chose to go back. A voice answered that only a tracheotomy scar would show and she would remember this "dream." When asked what would cause her death if she stayed, the voice said her spinal cord would be shown as severed. If she stayed, she would "become the Light." Lauren made the conscious decision to return because she saw that her mother would grieve deeply and sink into depression with each depressive episode if she died. The voice responded, "So shall it be, and what you shall receive is a blessing." Upon making her decision to return, Lauren knew with certainty that she would survive the accident despite the severity of her injuries. The experience provided her with specific medical information about her condition and gave her the agency to choose her own outcome based on love for her mother.
