Seven-year-old Anthony experienced a near-drowning incident during a family lake outing in New Jersey, summer 1973. Unable to swim, he attempted to jump from a boat dock to join his older siblings at a floating platform but accidentally jumped into deeper water on the non-swimming side. He panicked and struggled for several minutes while beachgoers initially thought he was playing. After going under and giving up the struggle, Anthony had a profound out-of-body experience.
Upon letting go, Anthony immediately left his body and observed himself underwater from above. He then rose above the water surface with remarkable 360-degree vision, seeing everything around him simultaneously. He sensed an omnipresent bright light above him that was "brighter but not painfully bright" - distinct from the sun. Despite being outside, he felt no boundaries, "no top, no sky, no limit." All panic and fear vanished, replaced by complete calmness. He felt like a balloon floating upward and watched as people on the beach finally noticed his distress. He observed a tall bearded man in red shorts run onto the dock, jump in, and pull him up, followed by another man and his father. The experience ended abruptly when he was "slammed" back into his body and began crying. He immediately tried telling his mother he had watched the rescue from above, but she dismissed it as impossible since he was underwater. At seven years old, he lacked the vocabulary to adequately describe the experience. He suppressed the memory until college when seeing a TV program on NDEs triggered recognition. The experience remains his clearest childhood memory, "sharp and real" despite lasting only about thirty seconds. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The out-of-body experience during clinical crisis aligns with biblical concepts of spirit-body separation. The omnipresent light could represent divine presence. The complete peace replacing panic reflects "peace that passes understanding." The 360-degree vision suggests enhanced spiritual perception. Being returned to complete his earthly life implies divine purpose and timing. The lasting impact and clarity of the experience suggests genuine spiritual encounter. Unbiblical elements: None identified. The experience contains no reincarnation references, occult practices, or contradictions to scripture. While no explicitly Christian imagery appears (no angels, Jesus, or heaven), this absence doesn't make it unbiblical, particularly given his young age and limited religious framework for interpretation.
