A nineteen-year-old man was driving a friend home when he approached a downtown intersection. After stopping and looking both ways without seeing any approaching traffic, he pulled into the intersection. Suddenly his friend yelled a warning at the top of his voice, and when the driver looked, he saw the blinding headlights of a speeding car heading directly toward them. The violent collision produced an awful sound of the car's side being crushed in, creating a catastrophic impact.
At the instant of impact, there was a brief moment during which he seemed to pass through darkness, an enclosed space, which passed very quickly. Then he found himself floating approximately five feet above the street, positioned about five yards away from the wrecked vehicle. From this elevated external position, he heard the echo of the crash dying away and maintained a clear view of the entire accident scene. He watched as people came running from all directions and began crowding around the damaged car, observing the commotion from his floating vantage point above. From his position outside the vehicle, he could see his friend get out of the car in obvious shock. More significantly, he could clearly see his own body still trapped in the wreckage among all the people gathering at the scene. He observed the crowd trying to extract his body from the twisted metal. His legs were visibly twisted from the impact, and there was blood all over the place. He maintained clear visual awareness of his severely injured physical form while simultaneously existing in a separate conscious state floating above the scene. The young man maintained this out-of-body perspective throughout the immediate aftermath of the crash, observing both his injured body and the rescue efforts from his elevated position five feet above and five yards away from the accident site.
