A woman admitted to the hospital with heart trouble experienced a severe cardiac arrest while lying in her hospital bed the morning after admission. She began having severe chest pain and pressed the button to call for nurses. When they arrived and started working on her, she was lying uncomfortably on her back. As she turned over, she quit breathing and her heart stopped beating. The nurses immediately shouted "Code pink! Code pink!" as they recognized the cardiac emergency.
At that moment, she felt herself moving out of her body, sliding down between the mattress and the rail on the side of the bed. She experienced passing through the rail itself and continuing down to the floor. Then she began rising upward slowly, observing more nurses rushing into the room - approximately a dozen in total. Her doctor, who happened to be making rounds in the hospital, was called and she watched him enter the room as well. She drifted past the light fixture, seeing it clearly and distinctly from the side, before stopping and floating just below the ceiling, looking down at the resuscitation efforts. She felt like a piece of paper that someone had blown up to the ceiling. From her position near the ceiling, she had a clear view of the entire resuscitation attempt. Her body was stretched out on the bed in plain view with all the medical staff standing around it. She heard one nurse exclaim "Oh, my God! She's gone!" while another leaned down to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. She could see the back of this nurse's head and particularly noticed her short-cut hair. When the staff brought in the defibrillator machine and applied the shocks to her chest, she saw her entire body jump up off the bed and heard every bone in her body crack and pop - describing it as "the most awful thing." Throughout this, she observed them beating on her chest and rubbing her arms and legs. Despite watching the desperate resuscitation efforts, she felt completely fine and wondered why they were going to such trouble, thinking "I'm just fine now." Eventually, the resuscitation succeeded and she returned to her body, retaining vivid memories of observing the entire procedure from above.
