A college student working a summer job driving a large semi-tractor-trailer truck experienced a life-threatening accident when he dozed off at the wheel. The last thing he remembered was seeing a road sign before falling asleep. He awoke to an awful scraping sound as the right outside tire blew out, followed by the left tires blowing from the weight and sway of the truck. The vehicle turned over on its side and went skidding down the road directly toward a bridge. He was fully aware that the truck was going to hit the bridge and knew exactly what was happening.
During the period while the truck was skidding toward certain impact, his entire life flashed before him in extraordinary detail. The review began with his earliest memory at age two, following his father as he walked along the beach. The progression continued chronologically through his childhood: breaking his new red wagon at Christmas when he was five, crying while going to school in first grade wearing a gaudy yellow raincoat his mother had bought. He remembered something specific about each year in grammar school, each teacher, and something that stood out about every grade level. The review continued through junior high, including getting a paper route, then working in a grocery store, progressing right up to his present moment about to begin his second year in college. The life review was remarkably comprehensive and extraordinarily rapid. Events that would take at least fifteen minutes to deliberately recall and picture sequentially had all appeared instantaneously in less than a split second. Everything came at once, automatically, with each memory crystal clear and vividly detailed. These weren't just any memories but specifically those events that had made lasting impressions on him throughout his life. The high points of his existence were all present in this instantaneous panoramic review. After the life review concluded, he found himself standing outside looking at the totally wrecked truck. Initially thinking he was dead and had become an angel or ghost, he began pinching himself to determine if he was alive. Miraculously, despite the truck being completely destroyed, he had somehow been ejected through the front windshield without receiving a single scratch. All the glass had been blown out, and he had survived completely uninjured.
