Carol nearly died from complications of aplastic anemia, a serious disease of the bone marrow that impairs the body's ability to produce blood cells. This life-threatening condition led to a profound near-death experience that included an exceptionally detailed and transformative life review.
During her NDE, Carol experienced what she called a life review, though she emphasized it was far more in-depth than that term suggests. The review was multifaceted, allowing her to experience incidents from her life from three perspectives simultaneously: from her own point of view, from the point of view of whoever was with her, and from the perspective of an outside witness or watcher. One particular incident from eighth grade affected her deeply. She and her friends had been verbally abusing another friend with cruel behavior. During the life review, she experienced this incident from all perspectives - she felt the secret thrill of being cleverly mean, the admiration tinged with fear from the girls going along with her, and most powerfully, the humiliation and pain of the girl they were tormenting. She didn't just observe the victim; she became her, experiencing her huddling next to the lockers crying alone. This left Carol filled with remorse, crying out "I'm sorry! I'm so, so sorry!" She felt despair over being dead and unable to make amends. In her darkest moment of despair, Carol heard a chuckle and felt a presence with her in the blackness. The presence expressed amusement over her despair and communicated something like "You were just a kid. How bad could you have been?" She was then embraced by love with layer upon layer of compassion. It felt like coming home - like coming inside from the snow to a warm fire, good cooking, and family laughter. Carol experienced euphoria beyond anything she had felt before or since. The experience taught her about the profound impact of our actions on others and the importance of love and compassion in human relationships.
