Michael was sixteen years old and undergoing surgery when his heart stopped, triggering an immediate near-death experience. The cardiac arrest occurred in a monitored surgical setting where medical staff could respond immediately to the emergency.
The moment his heart stopped, Michael experienced being immersed in what he could only describe as the purest form of love that exists. It was wonderful, as if his soul had been blended with the soul of what we perceive to be God. He experienced a complete unity where there was no way to tell where he began and where he ended. He was not in a physical body but instead was in, around, and part of an immense, wondrous, overwhelming sensation of love and understanding. He felt completely at ease in this state. Michael had full awareness of what had taken place from a physical standpoint but had no worries about any consequences of the end of his physical life. He found himself in a completely different place that was far more wonderful than earthly existence. He wanted to stay there, experiencing utter peace, tranquility, bliss, and love all simultaneously. He emphasized that words pale in comparison to the actual feeling and cannot adequately describe how wonderful it felt to be there. The experience was so profound that he questioned why anyone would not want to stay in such a state. Following his resuscitation and recovery, Michael came to believe that everyone will become one with God when their time comes. The experience left him with an unshakeable conviction about the reality of divine union and the continuation of consciousness beyond physical death.
