Martin was fourteen years old and experimenting with dangerous drugs when he overdosed. He experienced his heart beating erratically before it stopped completely. He lost consciousness and had a profound near-death experience that would reshape his understanding of existence.
After losing consciousness, Martin found himself floating or flying, then standing on the floor of a hall looking toward the far end where God was present. More accurately, he perceived a great Fire or Light that he understood both represented and actually was God - a paradox he accepted without intellectualizing. The presence was totally beyond anything he had ever imagined - beyond language and thought, utterly transcendent yet mysteriously near and accessible. Martin felt awed, struck dumb, amazed, and overwhelmed in ways that words could not adequately describe. The experience was one of total love, total goodness, and total knowing. God communicated directly to Martin's mind without words, asking a profound question: "You don't really know yourself, do you?" This simple question carried multiple layers of meaning, including "You don't know anything, do you?" and "Nobody knows anything, do they?" The implication was that humanity doesn't know how to love or exist with full awareness and acceptance of God's existence. Martin had to admit he didn't know anything, standing before God who knows everything. He understood he had to return to life, and both he and God knew it without discussion. Disappointed that he couldn't continue into the Light, Martin dutifully and sadly turned around to go back to his earthly existence. The experience left him with a deep understanding of God's transcendent nature and humanity's limited comprehension.
