A comatose man was discovered in a park and received cardiac massage from bystanders before being transported to the coronary care unit. Upon arrival, while still comatose, a nurse removed his dentures and placed them in a crash cart drawer. After approximately ninety minutes of resuscitation efforts, his blood pressure and heart rhythm stabilized, though he remained comatose and was transferred to intensive care.
Over a week later, when the patient emerged from his coma and was transferred back to the coronary care unit, he immediately recognized the nurse who had removed his dentures. He said "you know where my dentures are" and proceeded to accurately describe the crash cart with bottles on top and the sliding drawer underneath where his dentures had been placed. This observation was particularly remarkable as he had been completely comatose during the entire resuscitation process. The patient reported that he had watched the entire resuscitation scene from above, outside his body. He accurately described not only the room layout and equipment but also the people present during his resuscitation. He expressed particular concern that the medical team might stop their resuscitation efforts, having somehow perceived their negative assessment of his prognosis during the procedure. The nurse confirmed all details of the patient's account, including the accurate description of the crash cart, the placement of the dentures, and notably confirmed that the resuscitation team had indeed been "extremely negative about the patient's prognosis" during their efforts. This case provides strong evidence of veridical perception during a state of deep unconsciousness.
