Seven-year-old Katie was discovered floating face down in a YMCA swimming pool and was resuscitated by pediatrician Dr. Melvin Morse in the emergency room. She remained profoundly comatose with massive brain swelling, no gag reflex, and required artificial ventilation. Despite being given only a 10% chance of survival, she made a remarkable full recovery within three days.
During her follow-up appointment, Katie demonstrated accurate knowledge of events during her coma. She recognized Dr. Morse as "the one with the beard" and accurately described being moved from a large room to a smaller room for X-rays, as well as having a tube inserted down her nose. All these observations were made while her eyes were shut and her brain was in a deep comatose state. When asked about the drowning, Katie revealed she had "visited the Heavenly Father" during her near-death state. Katie described experiencing initial darkness followed by a tunnel through which a being named Elizabeth came to guide her. Elizabeth was described as tall and nice with bright golden hair. She met several people including her deceased grandfather, two young boys named Mark and Andy, and others. She reported visiting her earthly home where she observed her brothers playing with a GI Joe in a jeep while her mother cooked roast chicken and rice, even knowing what clothes they wore. Her parents confirmed these details with shocked accuracy. Katie's experience concluded with Elizabeth taking her to meet the Heavenly Father and Jesus. When asked if she wanted to go home, she initially wanted to stay, but when Jesus asked if she wanted to see her mother, she said yes and then awakened. Upon awakening in intensive care, her first words were repeatedly asking for Mark and Andy. The experience profoundly impacted Dr. Morse, leading him to conduct formal research into childhood NDEs.
