Mary Jo Rapini, a counselor, experienced a near-death experience after an aneurysm (abnormal bulge in a brain artery) nearly took her life. She developed symptoms while working out at a gym and was rushed to the hospital where she was placed in intensive care. As her condition worsened, she lost consciousness.
During her NDE, Mary Jo saw a luminescent light that grew large, and she went into it through a tunnel. She entered a beautiful room where God held her. God called her by name and told her she could not stay. Despite her protests about being a good wife, mother, and professional who worked with cancer patients, God insisted she had to return to her earthly existence. The most significant veridical element was God's specific communication with her. God asked her, "Have you ever loved another the way you've been loved here?" When she replied that it was impossible because she was human, God held her close and said, "You can do better." This exchange provided her with specific knowledge about the nature of divine love versus human love, and the message that humans can improve their capacity to love. Mary Jo returned to consciousness with this transformative message about love. The experience changed her understanding of love and her life purpose, giving her a specific mission to love others more completely as she had been loved during her NDE.
