In 1963, this young man lost control of his car and collided with a brick wall, suffering severe injuries including fractured face and sinus cavities and a broken jaw. After the crash, he sat on wet grass near the destroyed vehicle with intense facial pain before drifting into unconsciousness. When he regained awareness in the hospital, his face was covered and he could tell from the sounds he was in a medical setting.
He experienced a distinct sensation of floating out of his body and saw his parents at his bedside, feeling their emotional pain. Standing next to them as an invisible observer, he tried to console his mother but could not get her attention. He felt like "a fly on the wall" observing the scene. As he realized they would eventually discover he was not in pain, his empathetic suffering subsided. A light came into view, growing larger and brighter as he drew closer. He knew this was the end of his life and was not afraid. The young man observed his parents at his bedside from an out-of-body perspective, seeing their emotional distress while doctors had told them he was going to die. He watched his own body with detachment and tried unsuccessfully to communicate with his grieving mother. As he approached the light, a voice shouted "No, not yet!" causing him to return very hard into his body with a loud gasp. He knew he would survive after that, understanding that "when they say it's not your time, it's not your time." The experience left him with the ability to intuit people's feelings and understand their emotional logic.
