Sheila suffered from multiple severe allergies throughout her life. During elective surgery, despite informing the medical team about all her allergies, she experienced a severe allergic reaction to a medication that caused her heart to stop. The surgical team was in near-panic trying to resuscitate her.
Immediately after cardiac arrest, Sheila found herself at ceiling level observing the flatlined EKG machine and the frantic resuscitation efforts. She felt profound peace and was completely free of pain. Her consciousness drifted from the operating room to the nursing station on the floor where she had been before surgery. From her vantage point near the ceiling, she watched nurses performing their daily duties. A tunnel then opened and she was drawn through it toward a bright light at the end. She passed through into an area of beautiful, mystical light where she encountered several beloved deceased relatives. The reunion was joyous with embracing. She found herself with a mystical being of overwhelming love and compassion who asked if she wanted to return. Sheila observed the flatlined EKG during her cardiac arrest and later witnessed the nursing station activities from ceiling level while clinically dead. She accurately described seeing nurses at their station on the floor where she had been before surgery. When she shared these observations with a nurse after recovery, the nurse responded with shock and fright. After discussion with the being of light about whether to return, Sheila made the difficult decision to come back despite being in a realm of overwhelming love. She awoke in the ICU over a day later with tubes and wires all over her. When she tried to share her experience with hospital staff at this Catholic hospital, a nun declared it "the work of the devil," causing enormous reluctance to share her NDE afterwards.
