Paddy from County Cork underwent heart bypass surgery and valve replacement on December 21, 2009, the shortest day of the year. He was in his late 70s and had been hospitalized for three weeks prior to the operation. Earlier symptoms included being slow going uphill and shortness of breath. The surgery was long and complicated, during which the doctor later confirmed he had died for some time with machines keeping him alive.
During the period when he was clinically dead, Paddy met every family member who had passed away before him. He saw his mother who died in 1976 at age 76, and his father who died when Paddy was only five years old, over 70 years earlier. His mother appeared as a tall, hardworking woman moving around and looking at him. His father sat in a chair dressed in ordinary clothes. Beside his father was a young person Paddy immediately recognized as his brother John, who had died from meningitis at age 10 before Paddy was born. John looked identical to one of Paddy's sons. His father-in-law was also present, dressed in working clothes, exactly as Paddy knew him. Additionally, many other people were scattered around, some sitting and others moving about, though Paddy didn't recognize most of them. In a separate, much brighter location with radiant light, Paddy saw Pope John Paul II sitting in a chair wearing his robes with a brownish cape over his shoulders. Paddy had great admiration for the Pope and had traveled to Limerick to see him during his visit to Ireland. The setting appeared to be inside a large room like a kitchen, with no visible sky. Paddy was happy in this place and didn't want to return. The operation was successful - when he woke, he felt no pain despite the eight-hour surgery, only thirst. He remains convinced he was in heaven and will meet his deceased relatives again when he dies. He often witnessed dying people's eyes opening and smiling at the ceiling in their final moments, reinforcing his belief that relatives come to meet the dying.
