Mary from County Down lost a baby on New Year's night transitioning from 1995 to 1996. A few nights after the miscarriage, while resting at home and asleep in bed, she had what she described as more than a dream - an experience where she felt truly present and participating. The experience required subsequent hospital admission and surgery due to complications from the miscarriage.
During this experience, Mary met her husband's grandparents in her downstairs hallway, though they had died before she could meet them in life. Despite never seeing them before, she immediately knew who they were. The grandfather wore a serge-style gabardine coat related to work he had done in life, while his wife wore a fawn-colored raincoat and colored scarf. They appeared to be visiting but indicated they weren't coming in to stay. The grandfather told Mary, "We've come for the parcel!" She gave them something wrapped in a blanket, understanding this represented her lost baby. As she walked them to the door, the grandmother said, "You're not coming with us! It's not your time!" The grandfather added, "Tell your husband that I will take care of this parcel until you come home!" They then departed through her front door. The next morning, Mary told her husband about the experience. When he later told his mother about the miscarriage, she revealed she had been praying to her father (the grandfather) for Mary that same night. A week later, Mary received a photograph of the grandfather that exactly matched her vision of him. Years later, she saw a photograph of the grandmother that also matched perfectly. The experience provided crucial consolation, giving her a sense of where her baby had gone and that they would meet again. Mary could have easily died from the complications and considers herself fortunate to have survived.
