Martina from County Laois experienced an electrical shock at approximately age 6-8 while living in a cottage with her large family of 14 children. Standing on the end of a bed in the girls' bedroom, she reached up to touch a live electrical socket mounted high on the wall. Upon putting her finger into the socket, she was thrown across the room by the electrical current and fell back onto the bed.
Immediately after the shock, Martina saw a nice elderly lady sitting beside her bed, smiling at her. The woman was small with silver hair, wearing black silk that made a rustling sound. There was a strong musty smell like mothballs from her clothing. The lady sat there while Martina drifted in and out of consciousness. When her mother came into the room after hearing the bang, Martina described the lady in detail, including the rustle of her skirt and the mothball smell. It was determined that the woman Martina saw was her paternal grandmother who had died before she was born. Her father, who rarely came into her bedroom, came to sit by her bed after her mother told him about the vision. He was fascinated and asked her to describe the lady again. Martina believes her grandmother came to her because she knew that while Martina had faced potential death from the electrical shock, it wasn't her time to go. Martina also later saw her maternal grandmother in broad daylight, sitting on the stoop of an old barn, working with her hands. When she told her sister and initially said the grandmother was knitting, her sister corrected her, noting their grandmother never knitted. Martina then remembered correctly that she was shelling peas, which her sister confirmed was exactly what their grandmother used to do on the stoop. Martina believes these spirits are around us constantly and appear during times of crisis when we cry out in despair.
