Jodie from County Wexford underwent gallstone surgery nearly 30 years before her account. Initially her doctor dismissed her symptoms, but she ended up in Emergency and was admitted to Intensive Care after experiencing severe complications during the operation. The medical crisis was described as very tough on her system.
During her time in hospital, Jodie had an out-of-body experience where she found herself walking on a long road with gentle curves. The road was creamy-white tarmac with small individual fields on each side that had no visible boundaries or hedgerows. She was walking behind her deceased grandmother and grandfather who were linking arms, something they never did in real life. They were strolling and conversing together. Despite trying hard to catch up with them, she couldn't catch her breath or reach them. The grandparents continued walking until they reached a corner turning right, with a high old stone wall to the left and what appeared to be a low hedge to the right. At this point, her grandmother suddenly turned around and firmly told her "Go back! You're not to follow us! Go back!" They then went around the corner and disappeared from view. Jodie woke up at some point afterward in the hospital. The experience had lasting impact on Jodie, who remains certain it was her grandmother's voice she heard. She recognized it clearly from spending extensive time with her grandmother as a child, carrying her shopping on Fridays and visiting on Sundays. Though she questions whether she truly saw the vision or if it was a mental illusion, she can still hear her grandmother's voice telling her to go back. She believes her grandparents appeared at that critical moment during her medical emergency.
