Christy from County Clare was working as a plumber in 1990 when he experienced a severe electrical shock while fixing a leak. Standing in a water-filled hole wearing waders, he was cutting a pipe when electrical current suddenly made everything live. The force of the shock was described as being hit by two buses, and he was blown out of the hole. He felt he couldn't take it anymore and believed he was gone.
Immediately after the shock, Christy found himself out of his body, floating approximately 30 feet above the scene. From this bird's-eye view, he could see his own body lying on the ground on its back, appearing lifeless with no pain sensation. He felt the real him was above while what was below was just a body. While in this state, he encountered his youngest brother Paul, who had died in a car accident the previous April at age 23. Paul appeared exactly as Christy knew him, right beside him in the same space. Paul engaged Christy in conversation, asking how they could tell the family that Christy was gone too, expressing concern about breaking their parents' hearts after already losing one son. During this exchange, Christy saw his own funeral and burial beside his brother's grave. He saw everyone's faces at the funeral. This vision upset him and made him realize he had unfinished business and needed to make changes in his life. He felt he had a choice and decided to return. Upon making the decision to return, Christy found himself back in his body lying on the ground. Though unable to speak initially, he knew he was alright. His coworkers helped him and took him to the nearby hospital. The experience profoundly changed his life - he stopped being afraid of dying or living, left his job to follow his heart, and became more spiritual rather than religious.
