Catherine from County Cork experienced a toxic drug reaction in June 2005 while in her 40s. After returning from a sponsored walk overseas and a holiday to Mexico, she developed severe blisters and her skin began burning. She was admitted to hospital where dermatologists diagnosed a rare toxic reaction to medication, with only a one-in-a-million chance of occurrence and a one-in-four chance of death. She was transferred to the burns unit in critical condition.
During her critical illness, Catherine sat up in her hospital bed and saw a soft candlelight ahead. She found herself in a tunnel-like passageway, floating toward an increasingly bright light. The experience was peaceful and without stress. At the end of the light, she saw three deceased family members: her mother, father, and brother. They appeared exactly as they had before death, but happier and without the stress of earthly life. They were smiling at her but did not speak. Catherine initially felt happy and wanted to go to them, but when she reached halfway across, she stopped. With one foot suspended beyond the halfway mark, she thought about her children and husband and realized she wasn't ready to leave. She said "I'm not ready" and began moving backward. Her deceased relatives grew smaller and disappeared into the distance as her body returned to the hospital bed pillow. According to her husband, this experience marked the turning point in her recovery. She spent a month in hospital and six months recovering, having lost two stone in weight. The experience changed her life perspective, making her more grateful and less caught up in daily stresses.
