Viola Horton underwent emergency surgery and experienced a profound near-death experience with multiple veridical observations that were later confirmed by her family and medical team. During the surgery, while unconscious and presumably under anesthesia, she left her body and was able to observe events occurring in different areas of the hospital.
During her out-of-body experience, Viola first left the operating room and traveled to the waiting room where her family had gathered. From this vantage point, she made several specific observations that would later prove highly evidential. She saw her young daughter wearing mismatched plaid clothing, which the daughter had hastily put on to rush to the hospital. She observed her brother-in-law using the pay phone and was able to hear his conversation clearly. She approached him trying to make contact and heard him telling a business associate: "Well, I was going out of town to see Uncle Henry, but it looks like my sister-in-law is going to kick the bucket, so I'd better stick around and be a pallbearer." The veridical observations were remarkably specific and later confirmed by multiple family members. Her observation of her daughter's mismatched plaid clothing was confirmed by the family, who knew the girl had dressed hastily. Most remarkably, her brother-in-law's phone conversation was overheard by other family members who confirmed the exact words, including his insensitive comment about being a pallbearer. The family was stunned when Viola later confronted him directly saying "Next time I die, you go off to see Henry because I'll be just fine." After recovery, when Viola shared these observations with her doctor and family, they initially doubted her account until she revealed specific details that proved she had indeed witnessed these events while supposedly unconscious in surgery. The embarrassment of her brother-in-law when confronted with his exact words, witnessed by multiple family members, provided strong corroboration that Viola's consciousness had indeed traveled outside the operating room during her medical crisis.
