Dr. Tony Cicoria, an orthopedic surgeon in upstate New York, was struck by lightning while using a pay phone at a family picnic in 1994. As he went to hang up after calling his mother, a brilliant flash of light exited the phone handpiece and struck him in the face. The massive electrical charge from the lightning bolt threw his body backwards like a rag doll, causing immediate cardiac arrest and clinical death.
Immediately upon being struck, Cicoria experienced leaving his body in a paradoxical manner - while his physical body was blown backwards, he felt himself move forward. He found himself hovering above the scene, invisible to others, watching his motionless body on the ground. His mother-in-law screamed from the top of the clubhouse stairs, looking down at his body but not seeing his consciousness floating above. He witnessed people gathering around his body, not knowing what to do, until a woman took charge and began chest compressions. He tried yelling instructions but no one could hear him. He then traveled through the building, eventually losing his physical form and becoming "just a ball of energy and thought." He entered a river of bluish-white light that he described as "God energy," experiencing absolute love and peace, and witnessed a mural-like life review. The primary veridical observation was witnessing the woman performing CPR on his body from his out-of-body perspective. He observed the specific resuscitation efforts while his body was clinically dead from the lightning strike. When he returned to his body, severely burned from head to foot where the lightning had traveled, his first words to the woman who saved him were "It's okay, I'm a doctor." Following recovery, Cicoria experienced a profound transformation, developing an obsessive need to listen to and play classical piano music despite having no previous interest or significant training. He began composing his own music, including "The Lightning Sonata," and eventually performed at concert venues. This spontaneous acquisition of musical ability following his NDE represents one of the most dramatic examples of post-NDE transformation and unexplained skill acquisition.
