Dr. Rajiv Parti, chief of anesthesiology at Heart Hospital in Bakersfield, California, underwent emergency surgery at UCLA Medical Center on Christmas Eve 2008 for a severe pelvic infection. He had been admitted with a fever of 104-105 degrees Fahrenheit and required surgery to drain the infection and remove an artificial urinary sphincter. During the procedure, while deeply anesthetized, Parti experienced a profound near-death experience that included verifiable out-of-body observations.
While unconscious under general anesthesia, Parti found his consciousness separated from his body and observed the surgery from a vantage point near the ceiling. He witnessed the surgeon cutting him open and saw all the operating room personnel cover their faces as the odor from his infected abdomen filled the room. He observed a nurse applying eucalyptus-scented water to the surgical masks to combat the smell. He heard the anesthesiologist tell a dirty joke that he later repeated back to him. His consciousness then traveled outside the operating room to India, where he observed his mother and sister discussing dinner preparations, noting they would have rice, vegetables, yogurt, and legumes, and observing the foggy, cold night with a small electric heater glowing in the corner. The most remarkable veridical observations included hearing and later repeating a dirty joke told by the anesthesiologist while Parti was under deep anesthesia. The anesthesiologist blushed when Parti repeated it in recovery, confirming its accuracy. He also accurately described the use of eucalyptus water on surgical masks and specific surgical procedures he witnessed from above. His observation of his family's dinner conversation in India, including specific menu items and weather conditions, represented a distant observation that would have been impossible to know through normal means. Following the experience, which also included encounters with deceased relatives and a transformative spiritual journey, Parti completely changed his medical practice from anesthesiology to consciousness-based healing. The verified observations, particularly the joke told during surgery and the accurate description of surgical procedures while under deep anesthesia, provide strong evidence for consciousness existing independently of the brain.
