Andrea underwent a routine CT scan when she experienced a severe allergic reaction to the contrast dye. She began sneezing uncontrollably immediately after the injection. As the scans were being performed, she found herself unable to speak or breathe and subsequently lost consciousness. The nurse urgently called for the code blue team as Andrea had apparently died.
During this medical crisis, Andrea experienced leaving her body and observing the emergency scene from above. She watched as the code blue team entered and surrounded what she initially thought was another person, not realizing it was her own body below. She observed the medical team with remarkable clarity as they performed life-saving procedures. She witnessed herself being intubated and saw the chest compressions being administered as the team struggled to revive her. She could see her catheterization and all the equipment and activity surrounding her body. The most striking veridical observations included watching the specific medical procedures being performed on her body. She saw the intubation process in detail and observed the chest compressions from her out-of-body vantage point. She witnessed the catheterization procedure and could describe the positioning of the medical team around her body. All of these observations were later confirmed by the medical staff to be accurate descriptions of the resuscitation efforts. After forty-five minutes of resuscitation efforts, her heart finally began beating on its own. At that point, she felt herself being pulled back into her physical body. The medical team later confirmed that she had been clinically dead during the code blue and that her descriptions of the resuscitation procedures were remarkably accurate despite her being unconscious throughout the event.
