Kenneth Hagin was 15 years old and bedfast for five months with a deformed heart when his heart stopped beating in 1933. Several doctors had said he would likely die. On this particular night, he had taken a turn for the worse with his family and grandparents present in his room.
As his blood ceased to circulate and his heart stopped, he leaped out of his body like a diver jumping off a diving board. He maintained consciousness and could see his family members around his physical body. He began descending feet first down through what seemed like a well, cavern, or cave into a pit. The lights of earth faded away as darkness encompassed him - a darkness blacker than any night he had ever experienced. The farther down he went, the darker it became, until he could see flickers of light on the walls of darkness. At the bottom of the pit, he saw giant orange flames with white crests beyond what appeared to be gates or an entrance to hell. He was pulled toward hell like a magnet pulls metal, knowing that once he entered those gates, he could never return. A creature met him at the bottom and took his arm to escort him in. Suddenly, a male voice spoke in a foreign language from above, causing the entire place to shake. The creature released him, and a suction force pulled him back up through the darkness. This happened three times total - his heart stopped, he descended to hell's entrance, the voice spoke, and he was pulled back. On the third occasion, he cried out to God in Jesus' name, asking for forgiveness of his sins. After returning the third time, he spoke with his grandmother and asked to say goodbye to family members, then later went on to be healed and become a minister.
