In December 1943, army medical student George Ritchie developed severe illness at Camp Barkeley, Texas. His fever reached 106.5°F from double lobar pneumonia. During X-ray procedure, he collapsed unconscious. Ward assistant found him unresponsive with no detectable pulse. Doctor confirmed death, instructing preparation for morgue with sheet pulled over his head. Nine minutes later, assistant noticed hand movement and suggested adrenaline injection directly into heart. Faint pulse detected and life restored. Dr. Donald Francy called it "the most amazing medical case I have ever encountered."
George awoke outside his body, seeing someone who looked like him in the bed. Leaving the ward, he traveled at incredible speed over landscape seeing rivers, towns, and forests below. He descended to a city and stopped at cafe with "Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer" sign. When trying to speak to a man entering, his hand passed through him. Returning to hospital, he searched frantically through 5,000 beds for his body, finally identifying it by his Phi Gamma Delta ring. A brilliant light being appeared, showing George his entire life in three-dimensional panorama asking "What did you do with your life?" The being showed him realms of earthbound spirits trying to interact with living, including dead trying to possess living bodies through gaps in auras. He witnessed a vast library, spiritual college with beings studying universe, and distant radiant city of pure light before being pulled back to his body. Years later driving through Vicksburg, Mississippi - a town he'd never visited - George experienced overwhelming familiarity. He correctly predicted street layouts and shoreline bends. He directed driver to go straight instead of left, finding the exact white cafe with red roof and Pabst Blue Ribbon sign from his NDE. The telephone pole with guy wire he tried to lean on was there. Checking map, Vicksburg lay directly on line between Camp Barkeley and Richmond where he'd been trying to reach during NDE. In 1952, Life magazine published drawing of massive sphere with men working inside on machinery. George recognized it as exact sphere he'd seen in spiritual college during 1943 NDE - later revealed as prototype atomic submarine engine, technology that didn't exist until 8 years after his experience.
