David Wallace experienced his fourth NDE in 2010 during triple bypass and mitral valve replacement surgery for congestive heart failure. Under anesthesia, he awoke in deep darkness before being pulled into bright space floating above the operating room. He watched the medical team using defibrillator paddles on a patient, seeing the body jolting with each attempt. Only when getting closer did he realize it was his own body on the table. His guardian Kupuna, who had appeared in a childhood NDE, pulled him away from the scene.
David found himself above downtown Honolulu before traveling through a narrow tunnel to a small room he recognized from his first NDE at age five. Kupuna explained this was a waiting room between life and afterlife and identified himself as David's ancestor. Three large Hawaiian men stood guard while outside people tried to tempt him with food and drinks. When Kupuna told him to look with "spiritual eyes," David saw the people were actually hideous, frightening figures trying to take his soul. The guardians protected him until his fate became clear. Surgery lasted seven hours instead of four due to complications. In David's second NDE at age 25 from double pneumonia, his deceased friend Bruce appeared and showed him a tunnel through his closet leading to a landscape where deceased relatives and pets greeted him. Bruce blocked him from crossing when his grandfather shook his head no. After returning, David and his wife found the closet clothes pushed aside exactly as Bruce had done. In his fourth NDE, circular burn marks on his ribs confirmed defibrillator use. A nurse relative later confirmed the marks were from the specific instrument used to restart his heart after it stopped during valve repair. The physical evidence of moved closet clothes and defibrillator burn marks, combined with medical confirmation of cardiac arrest requiring resuscitation, verify David's out-of-body observations during clinical death when brain activity would have ceased.
