Dr. Tony Cicoria was at a lakeside pavilion in Athens, New York, in August 1994 when he attempted to use a payphone. As he pulled the handpiece away from his face to hang up, a brilliant bolt of lightning struck the pavilion, traveled through the phone, and struck him in the face. The electrical charge threw his body backwards like a rag doll, yet he experienced moving forward instead, finding himself standing bewildered at the phone while his body lay motionless on the ground ten feet behind him.
He watched as his mother-in-law screamed and rushed toward his body, while a woman began CPR on his lifeless form. He could see and hear everything but could not communicate with those around him. Upon realizing he was dead, he turned to leave and began climbing stairs, but his legs dissolved as he climbed, becoming just a ball of energy and thought by the time he reached the top. He passed through the wall into the room where his family was, moving diagonally over his wife who was painting children's faces, and had a clear realization his family would be fine. Once outside, he was immersed in a bluish white shimmering light accompanied by absolute love and peace - a pure positive flow of energy he could see flowing through everything. He witnessed high and low points of his life passing by and became ecstatic about where he was going. He was conscious of every millisecond even though time did not exist, thinking "This is the greatest thing that can ever happen to anyone." Suddenly he was back in his painful body, still unconscious but feeling the woman doing CPR. When he opened his eyes, he said "It's okay, I'm a doctor." He recovered over two weeks, and later developed an insatiable desire for classical piano music, eventually learning to play and compose original music including "The Lightning Sonata." The experience convinced him that consciousness survives death and that the gift of life is greater than the sum of its parts.
