Jean Renee Hausheer was a 20-year-old medical student at UMKC when she developed what appeared to be an upper respiratory infection in summer 1977. Two weeks later, while taking an exam, she developed severe diplopia and bilateral ptosis. She was admitted to Independence Sanitarium Hospital with a rapidly descending paralysis, diagnosed as a Jacksonian variant of Guillain-Barre Syndrome. During pulmonary testing, she received an overdose of physostigmine, causing acute respiratory failure and precipitating a code blue.
During the resuscitation, she experienced leaving her body and viewing the emergency efforts from above with detached interest. Her essence departed her dying body and was drawn toward a brilliant ball of unimaginably white light that emanated perfect love and peacefulness. The light sourced from a beautiful central brilliance that far exceeded diamonds. This living ball of loving light surrounded and merged with her soul, becoming one and the same. Twice during the experience, she thought "No" about dying young, which halted her movement toward the light. She felt offered a choice between proceeding to the light or returning to earthly darkness. During the second pause, an audible voice from within the ball of light, neither male nor female, spoke directly to her saying "Don't worry. It's not your time yet. Return!" She then suddenly awoke on a respirator in the ICU, knowing with certainty she would survive. She wrote to her father about the experience, expressing total peace and happiness. The experience forever changed her life, removing all fear of death and providing certainty about the ineffable light of pure unconditional love that awaits beyond earthly existence. She recovered fully over a year, graduated from medical school, and went on to a successful career in ophthalmology. Years later, she was present at her father's death and recognized the moment his spirit transitioned, understanding exactly where he was traveling.
