Kat Dunkle had an abusive childhood and marriages to alcoholics, becoming a solid atheist by age 23. She looked to the sky and challenged God, saying if He existed, give her one year to feel loved, then He could take everything and kill her. Exactly one year later, after finding happiness with a new husband, everything fell apart - her father died, husband's business went bankrupt, and her son Mark was killed by a car. During a fight with her husband, she experienced severe chest pain requiring emergency surgery.
During surgery for internal bleeding, she died. She went through a tunnel and saw her husband and others crying by a street lamp, though they couldn't yet have been told of her death. She was told "they will be just fine." Moving through the tunnel toward brilliant light, she initially thought "There is no God" but suddenly knew with absolute certainty that God existed. She experienced overwhelming peace and happiness, knowing she was moving toward heaven. Suddenly she began falling, dropping into hell. She felt totally separated from everyone, "especially God." Though she didn't see flames, she felt the burning pain of flames in total darkness that would last forever. She heard screams of others and knew she had put herself there. She cried out to God for forgiveness, believing she wouldn't be released. She then traveled backward through the tunnel and re-entered her body, screaming "GOD IS REAL, GOD IS REAL." She heard an audible voice saying "Bring people to me." She became a solid Christian, later writing "Is it Safe to Die?: A Memoir of Death-to-Life, Second Chances, and Redemption."
