Betty Malz was pronounced dead in the hospital in 1959 from a ruptured appendix that created gangrene and destroyed her internal organs. She had never been sick before in her life and had a disdain for people with disabilities, but this experience transformed her. She was in a coma for 44 days before dying. During her death, she experienced a bright and glorious place under a deep blue sky with no fear, only peacefulness and beauty.
She was immediately aware of majestic music filled with exquisite harmonies from countless choirs. Around her feet, living waves of flowers splashed the velvet green meadows with color. She recognized people around the throne who had died during her lifetime, and they knew her. She stated that her guardian angel was the same one who escorted her to heaven and had been by her side from the time she converted to Christianity, having saved her from several dangerous situations. Betty saw heaven as described by many others - music everywhere like a movie soundtrack but wonderful rather than dramatic. The experience was literal, not metaphorical. Her angel did not prevent her death from the ruptured appendix, which she believes was allowed for her spiritual growth and development. She had to die to learn how to live, suffering horrible pain during her illness. The experience changed her completely. She said "I had to die to learn how to live. I cannot tell you how I suffered. The pain, the horrible pain... I never liked people until after this experience." She became a much more loving and caring person, gave many speeches about her experience, and wrote about it.
