George Ritchie was a private in the army in 1943 when he became seriously ill with double-lobar pneumonia and died of a heart attack. He was clinically dead for nine minutes until he was brought back by an injection of adrenaline. During his death, Ritchie left his body and initially proceeded toward Richmond, Virginia, upset about his ethereal, nonphysical body. He returned to the hospital to get his body.
When he arrived back in the room, it filled with light and he knew he was in the presence of Jesus, who gave him a comprehensive life review. Jesus then took him on a journey around the earth where he witnessed different spiritual dimensions. He saw dead people living in a form of hell among the living - alcoholic spirits in bars trying unsuccessfully to pick up shot glasses, being unable to do so because they were only spirits. He witnessed another spiritual plain with spirits who were angry and yelling at each other, attempting to fight but unable to touch one another. Ritchie was shown another dimension with great buildings filled with people engaged in research and study. He saw technological machinery beyond his understanding and a library filled with books. This level was not heaven but was filled with people who had spent their lives searching for knowledge and continued growing after death. Finally, he and Jesus traveled toward heaven, which he saw in the distance. Suddenly they were rushing back to earth and to the hospital room where Ritchie re-entered his body. The entire experience appeared more metaphorical than literal, showing how earthly life directly affects the afterlife.
