D.L. Moody, the great evangelist, was on his deathbed in 1899 when he had a profound near-death experience. Those around him heard him speaking, saying "Earth recedes, heaven opens before me! This is no dream, Will. It is beautiful. It is like a trance. If this is death, it is sweet. God is calling me and I must go. Don't call me back!"
After saying these words, Moody died, but the doctor present was able to revive him. Upon returning to consciousness, Moody shared what he had experienced during his brief death. He told those present "I went to the gate of heaven. Why, it was so wonderful, and I saw the children! I saw Irene and Dwight." These were his children who had previously died. The experience had a profound impact on Moody. He had reached the very gates of heaven and was able to see his deceased children there. The beauty and wonder of what he witnessed made death seem sweet rather than fearful. His statement that God was calling him and his plea not to be called back demonstrate the powerful attraction of the heavenly realm he glimpsed. This experience occurred in the presence of his son Will and a doctor who successfully revived him, providing immediate witnesses to both his death and his testimony upon return.
