Salvius was an abbot who died from a high fever in 584 A.D. He was lying on his bed when he died, and his body was taken out and placed on a table while monks and his mother mourned. The next morning, his body began to move and he came back to life, stirring and opening his eyes.
During his death, Salvius was seized by two angels and carried up to the high heavens. He reported that he thought he had under his feet not only this filthy world but the sun, moon, clouds and stars. He was taken through a door brighter than light into a dwelling where all the pavement was like shining gold and silver, with brightness and spaciousness beyond description. He saw a multitude of both sexes there that the length and breadth of the throng could not be seen. A cloud hung over one area that was brighter than any light, excelling all natural light, and a voice came out of the cloud like a voice of many waters. Salvius was greeted by men in priestly and worldly dress who his guides told him were martyrs and confessors. A very sweet odor enveloped him that refreshed him so that he wanted no food or drink. He heard a voice saying "Let him return to the world since he is necessary to our churches." Salvius threw himself on the pavement and wept, begging not to be sent back, but the voice promised to be his keeper until bringing him back to this place. He returned to his body after being dead for most of a night and morning, having been given specific information about the afterlife.
