At age three, Damon drowned and experienced a remarkable out-of-body perspective. He doesn't recall entering the water but remembers darkness and swirling sandy water around his face, feeling calm as though all would be okay. He then found himself staring at a little boy standing crying with arms raised, watching sand and water run off him. He was amazed by the sight of sand running from the boy's eyes, ears, and nose, thinking he didn't know so much sand could come from a boy's nose, eyes, and ears. He felt no compassion or empathy, viewing it as fine with nothing to be concerned about. To his left he could hear his mother hysterical and the toddler crying with commotion over what happened. He had little patience for it, thinking everyone should calm down as nothing dramatic had happened. He knew the child was himself and who everyone was, though he felt no real attachment to any of them.
