In 1976, George Rodonaia, a vocal communist dissident in Tbilisi, Georgia (then part of Russia), was deliberately run over twice by a car driven by a KGB member while waiting for a taxi to take him to the airport. He was rushed to the hospital where he was immediately pronounced dead, and his body was placed in a morgue freezer vault where it remained for three days. When his body was finally wheeled out for autopsy, a team of doctors began splitting open his lower torso. His eyes suddenly opened, which one doctor dismissed as a mere reflex and closed them to continue cutting. This happened a second time with no one thinking anything of it. When his eyes popped open a third time, the attending doctor jumped backward, screamed, and subsequently had to take a one-month leave of absence. Remarkably, Rodonaia's own uncle was one of the attending physicians.
During the three days he was supposedly dead, Rodonaia experienced an extensive near-death journey. He visited Paris and attempted to communicate with people who could hear but not see him. He traveled back in time and witnessed the execution of both his parents by the KGB, finally learning the truth about their fate as he had been raised by an aunt and uncle who never discussed what happened to them. He entered the minds of his friends to determine if they were truly loyal. Most significantly, he discovered that the pregnant wife of one of his friends had delivered a baby. He instantly confronted the crying infant, scanned her as if possessed of X-ray vision, and discovered she had a broken hip. He knew with certainty that the head nurse had dropped her. Rodonaia was also present in his wife's consciousness when she picked out his gravesite. While there, he observed her making mental lists of eligible bachelors with their pros and cons, as she was now a widow with two children to consider. His uncle was able to verify that it took three full days for the swelling of Rodonaia's tongue to recede enough for him to speak. When he could finally talk, his first words were about the baby with the broken hip. Being a physician himself, Rodonaia provided exact medical details of the infant's hip fracture to the doctors. When confronted with this specific information, the head nurse confessed to dropping the baby and was fired. He then recounted to his wife every single man on her mental lists, including all the traits she had privately considered for each one. This so shocked and frightened his wife that she would have nothing to do with him for a year, explaining "I had no privacy. We had to learn how to live together again."
